LORNE SULCAS – The Big Cat Guy – Trusted Motivational Speaker

Home » FAQs

Storytelling allows listeners to identify with the characters in the story, yet feel safe enough about not being personally confronted and becoming defensive. Storytelling has the power to break down defenses and open the listeners’ willingness to become part of the events that play off in the story. It does not matter what type of speaker you get. If he or she is able to tell a captivating story, you have an audience that are willing to listen. But let us have a look at some key characteristics of each of the above mentioned.

Transformational Speakers

Just like the word ‘transformational’, can it be concluded that Transformational Speakers intend to initiate or bring forth some form of transformation in human beings. Transformational Speakers help motivate and transform behavior. They provide strategies to help people develop more meaningful and successful lives. They help raise questions around perceptions, help awaken new beliefs, new awareness, and elicit new behavior. Transformational Speakers have experience and in-depth insight into human behavior and the challenges we typically face. They are knowledgeable, empathetic, and intuitive. They just know how to make a personal connection with their audience, even though a room full of people is addressed. Through their exceptional insight and understanding of human behavior, they are able to help audience members with personal growth and leadership development. They can move listeners deeply. Transformational Speakers are sincere, humble, genuine, and are able to make a listener feel that the message that is being delivered is meant for him or her in person. Messages delivered by Transformational Speakers are usually so clear and powerful that listeners will be able to clearly recall strategies given to them several months after they have heard it and still be able to implement what they have heard into practice. If put in hierarchy, this is the highest hierarchy that you will get amongst Transformational Speakers, Motivational Speakers, Keynote Speakers, and Inspirational Speakers. Lorne Sulcas is really a Transformational Speaker. But in general, most people do not really understand these differences. As a result you will find that most speakers will introduce themselves as Motivational Speakers or as Inspirational Speakers.

Motivational Speakers

Motivational Speakers aim to motivate and inspire people into action. Motivational Speakers help create an emotional desire and mental drive that will allow people to invest more energy and purpose into their goals. Organizations will often hire a Motivational Speaker to raise expectations or excitement before implementing changes in a company, or when being challenged with low employee morale. Or simply to assist in reaching a competitive edge, as is also often required by Sports Teams. Motivational Speakers will typically have a conversation some time before the event to gain a greater insight into the challenges that the organization face. A Motivational Speaker will then prepare accordingly and address these challenges specifically. A message delivered by a Motivational Speaker is less likely to endure if it is not acted upon immediately. It also depends on how personally a listener was affected by the message and how relevant it was to him. Precision and clarity of the message plays a key role. A motivational message will have its maximum effect if the message is clear, precise and the listener can personally identify with the message; and then act upon it in immediately. Notice the contrast here when you compare Transformational Speakers with Motivational Speakers. Messages delivered by Transformational Speakers have a long lasting impact. They are easy to recall and implement long after the messages have been delivered. Messages delivered by Motivational Speakers carries most of their weight in the short term. You will find that an audience member will have difficulty to recall any strategy that can be implemented into practice. A listener will be able to tell you that he enjoyed the speaker and that the Motivational Speaker was very good. But this is probably where it will end. There is one thing that all Motivational Speakers agree upon, though. A motivated employee is a more productive employee. One that is driven to succeed and find solutions.

Inspirational Speakers

One key difference between Motivational Speakers and Inspirational Speakers is the purpose of the message. An Inspirational Speaker will typically tell his own personal story. It is typically one of overcoming difficulties in severely adverse circumstances. Contrary to the task at hand for Motivational Speakers, you cannot have the same expectations from Inspirational Speakers. They do not address specific challenges that a company face, but rather just speak to inspire with their own personal story. It is not the purpose of Inspirational Speakers to change behavior, give strategies to increase sales, or to help an organization to develop a competitive edge. Inspirational Speakers will rather focus on their own history and retell it to the audience. They will tell, for example, how they overcame or survived a huge challenge, climbed a mountain, ride a long distance with a bicycle, or build a company up to a huge success. These are the type of stories we hear that inspire us to believe that if we try, we can do the same.

Keynote Speakers

Keynote Speakers are Public Speakers who deliver the primary speeches, or as we refer to it, the Keynote Address. A Keynote Speaker will deliver a speech that addresses the objectives of a meeting. Keynote Speakers will deliver their speeches at the end of an event, such as Award Functions, Conferences, Summits, Annual Meetings or Training Programs. The speech that is delivered by a Keynote Speaker is often viewed as the highlight of the event and most of the time the main reason why people will attend an event. Their speeches are very specific and relevant towards the outcome that the organizers wish to obtain. It can also be industry specific with the objective to educate. The general purpose of a keynote can be to educate, motivate or to inspire. It all depends on the objectives that needs to be met.

Motivational Speakers speak with the purpose to motivate an audience into taking action or changing their behavior. Motivational Speakers will use various emotive methods to relate to their audience and to inspire action.

They are often hired by companies to inspire, motivate and train or help employees to set goals and strategies and leave a lasting impression on the audience. They use professional, and often entertaining platform skills to make a listener feel like his goals are within reach. A good and well trained Motivational Speaker will typically do his homework before he engages with the audience. Often, a company will have some particular problem or request in mind, such as a desire to improve teamwork between employees, or help employees understand what is required to beat their competition. The real task at hand for Motivational Speakers is to get employees to want to do something instead of an organization having to use other methods such as politics, demoralizing evaluations, rules, intimidation, financial incentives, or threats to get results.

Motivational Speakers have the ability to raise employee engagement, raise energy levels and the willingness amongst employees to want to invest themselves in their work. It is not the work of Motivational Speakers to build job skills, but rather to strengthen the corporate culture and to inspire employees in understanding the power of working with the objectives of a leadership team and engage with the goals of the organization. Motivational Speakers help leadership teams to understand the power of building trust and unity with the rest of the workforce.

Opening Motivational Speakers plays a pivotal role in getting attendees to engage with purpose. A willing attendee will listen with purpose, to understand and learn. It is therefore also important for Event Organizers to understand exactly what to expect before they start looking Motivational Speakers. You will want your audience to be revved up and looking forward to the rest of the event.

Closing Motivational Speakers changes the way attendees feel about an event before going home. It makes the difference between learning a lot and taking that knowledge back to their workplace with enthusiasm and the willingness to implement what they have learned. It also changes the way attendees will remember a conference and thereby increasing the chances that he will return to the next conference with high expectations. You want attendees to start with high expectations and to leave on a high note.

Because Lorne has consistently exceeded meeting planners’ expectations. Audiences just love him and his talks are utterly unique, action packed, and massively energetic.

Agreed, there are many excellent Motivational Speakers. What makes Lorne’s talks so different is that he draws parallels between the survival skills used by the big cats and the skills needed by Organizations and Sports Teams to survive, and even by everyday life challenges for any person to Thrive in a Wild WorldTM .

Being an award winning Wild-life Photographer, Lorne brings his experience from the bushveld to his audience. Seeing Lorne’s incredible award-winning Wild-life Photography and hearing stories that the audience can relate to, leave them in awe, incredibly inspired. Added to this, where some members of the audience often have very little knowledge or insight into the behavioral aspects of the big cats, a new awareness and a new love affair with these cats and wildlife in general is formed.

Audience members remember these stories because they are so unique, simple, and powerful. There is no exception. When employees return to their workplace, they typically start comparing their strategies with those of the wild cats. Why? Because it is so simple, yet so effective. And consequently, so easy to remember.

Well, let me ask you this. If you are looking for one of the Top 10 Motivational Speakers, amongst whom should Lorne be classified as one of the Top 10 Motivational Speakers? Since 1996, Lorne has been speaking all over the world by sheer word-of-mouth recommendations and very little or no marketing, and these recommendations landed him speaking slots at organizational giants such as Sony, NASA, Gartner, London Stock Exchange and many more similar organizations worldwide.

And without exception, he has been pointed out time and time again as one of the top speakers at these events, and most of the time as the absolute top speaker of the event. So, it is then probably justified to classify him as one of the Top 10 Motivational Speakers, at least as far as those audiences, who heard him speak, are concerned.

By now Lorne is used to speaking to really any type of audience. He is often selected as one of the best Business Speakers or Keynote Speakers to address audiences of anywhere between 100 and 300 members. But being one of the favorite Conference Speakers to address 1500 members at a world conference, such as the London Stock Exchange is no exception to the rule. Then again, so was Lorne frequently invited as an After-Dinner Speaker to as little as 20 members in a crowd.

The best way to prepare for your event is to give Lorne a call at +27 72 833 3555. His frequent exposure to all kinds of situations might help you prepare well. You can certainly expect Lorne to assist you with a few good tips and some advice if you are dealing with a situation you have not encountered before.

If you need Lorne as a Keynote Speaker, he normally speaks between 45 and 75 minutes. But this can always be discussed, depending on what your needs are and what Lorne offers.

He is doing this for more than 10 years already and can comfortably fit into various roles. This is what is required from experienced Keynote Speakers. If you get someone that has trouble adapting, you should start wondering if you have the right person for the job. Whether you need him as a Business Speaker, a Keynote Speaker, a Conference Speaker or as an After-Dinner Speaker. Speak to Lorne. If you are working with an experienced Keynote Speaker such as Lorne, he will also be able to advise you on what works well and what does not.

Surely you can get Motivational Speakers that are willing to talk for $300, or maybe even for free. There are also Motivational Speakers, typically some Famous Motivational Speakers or some Celebrity Speakers, who will charge you nothing less than a few $100,000. But certainly, if a Motivational Speaker is worth his weight in gold, he will at a minimum, value himself enough also to charge a reasonable fee. That tends to range anywhere between $5000 and $50,000. So, there are quite a few considerations here.

How does your budget look? In general, you can expect to get what you pay for. And if you are looking for a Motivational Speaker that is worth his salt, you should expect to pay a fee according to that. If you only want to kill time, then it is ok to look for a Motivational Speaker that is willing to charge you only $300. But in general, Motivational Speakers are also willing to negotiate. Normally they do take into consideration what you can afford and so this should encourage you to ask if you need to. Prices charged by speakers mostly depend on experience, availability, and fame.

If budget is not a problem, you can consider the top 40 ranked-list as is given by Matt Morris

There are excellent Celebrity Speakers, but there are also horrible Celebrity Speakers. Being a celebrity does not define you as a speaker, and less so as an Inspirational Speaker, a Motivational Speaker or as a Keynote Speaker. And far less so as a Transformational Speaker.

Even more than just that, chances are you will pay a far bigger rate than you will do with another well trained and experienced person on your Motivational Speakers List.

Having a celebrity at your event might be great to fill the seats. But to have your event to be booked again and again, you need to have more than just that. Top Motivational Speakers will make your audience feel appreciated, inspired and motivated. He or she will also bring some humor to your event – a key aspect that is required to have your audience leave with a memorable experience and wanting to come back again and again.

It is true that there is no shortage of Motivational Speakers available today to choose from. Chances are that you will find a Motivational Speakers List with literally hundreds of them in close vicinity of your area. And your challenge will be to choose one, not knowing if a particular Motivational Speaker will really have the ability to make the impact on your audience that you wish to get. A huge majority of people who call themselves Motivational Speakers today are people who assigned themselves this title after learning to speak to an audience a few times without having the proper training or skills required to deliver the real results that are required.

Ask yourself, what are the take-aways that you want for your audience. It is no secret anymore that there is a huge number of speakers that label themselves as Motivational Speakers. The question is this. Do they get the desired results? Because this industry allows for anyone to assign this title to him or herself, it has become a big challenge to Events Organizers and Conference Organizers to sift through thousands of people on Motivational Speakers Lists on Speaker Bureaus’ websites and other places on the internet. Often on sites like these, self-acclaimed Motivational Speakers and Top Motivational Speakers are viewed in the same light and it can become an almost impossible task to differentiate the one from another. The only way that you can determine whether you get a Top Motivational Speaker, one that you are really hoping for, and who can live up to your expectations, is to do a bit of your own research.

There are plenty of listing services online. You can have a look at some of them here. The problem with many Speaker Bureau websites, although not all, is that it has become a numbers game. It can become an impossible task from distinguishing between quality and quantity. Some of these websites clearly state in their terms and conditions that they do not do checks on content or the quality of their speakers. The intent may very well also be that they want to give everyone a fair chance. It does not make things easier though for an Event Organizer or a Top Motivational Speaker.

So, there is an important number of key questions that you should ask before making this expensive decision – not only in monetary value but also in terms of valuing your reputation.

    1. Find out how long a Motivational Speaker is working in this industry. You will want to have an experienced motivational speaker who is long enough in this industry to know how to handle unforeseen circumstances, know how to read his audience, and know how to adapt to the reaction of the audience. Yet, a Motivational Speaker should also be in touch with innovation, time- and cultural shifts that are happening over time. In other words, he or she must be able to understand the behavior of modern society and be able to relate to them.
    2. Look at some good Motivational Speakers Videos and compare that with some of the Motivational Speaker you have in mind. If it is only promotional slides, you may be tricked by good marketing material. Try to see the speaker in action and who his audience is.
    3. Work through your Motivational Speakers List (a list of websites is given further down where you can explore more). Look at Motivational Speakers’ websites and look at their reviews. Look at who have used their services before. If they have some big-name companies listed as clients, you can be fairly certain that your selection from the Motivational Speakers List can get tick mark. Keep this list, both with the tick marks and the crosses for future reference, and build on that.
    4. Do some of your own research about some Motivational Speakers that are listed on Speaker Bureau Websites. This will assist you in making informed decisions. Ensure you are able to understand the similarities and differences amongst the concepts of Motivational Speakers, Inspirational Speakers, Keynote Speakers, and Transformational Speakers (a term used rarely because the general public is not familiar with it). After Dinner Speakers, Conference Keynote Speakers, Business Speakers, Leadership Speakers, Public Speakers, International Speakers, and Corporate Speakers can all fall in one of the above categories. Only, we use these terms to show our association with previous successes and events we have been involved with or give preference to. A list of some Speaker Bureau Websites is given below for you as a tool to do some homework. (Almost all of these links have been recommended to me by the free version of a very very powerful SEO tool and so they are not chosen at random)
    5. Look at promotional material. Professional and Top Motivational Speakers take that very seriously. They are in the game of understanding people and working with them. That is where their passion lies. And that said, I recommend you have a conversation with a few Motivational Speakers before you make a choice. Speak to them at length. Certainly, the way they treat you should be an indicator of how important their audiences are to them as well. True, they travel a lot and the manner and speed of response to your requests will definitely reflect on the personality of the Motivational Speaker. In my case, due to the nature of my talks and being out in the bush sometimes with no internet connection to stay on top with what I bring to my audience, it can be a challenge. Because, when I do make contact with clients, I prefer to speak to them in person.

  • I recently recommended Lorne as a speaker to a key client of mine for their annual sales conference and received the following response. “Lorne just blew them away.” As a speaker who weaves key business lessons into his stories of the wild Lorne Sulcas is right up there with the best. I would have no hesitation in recommending Lorne as a speaker at your conference. Just don’t be surprised if he steals the show.

  • I talk a lot; people actually joke with me about how much I talk! But when I heard you speak, for once I felt compelled to listen rather than talk. You are the best speaker I’ve heard. I loved your presentation. It was stunning, I learned so much. I told my husband: ‘Get Lorne to speak to your company.’

  • …There was such significant energy around Lorne’s seminar. It was amazing. He customized it exactly to our needs. And he made us laugh too. I really appreciated his excellent responses in the Q&A at the end that really added to the learning … hugely inspiring and valuable.
